Today we are going to build on our teaching that only the spirit of a person is
regenerated when they get born again while the body and soul remain the same. That
teaching on the spirit, soul and body of man forms the foundation of our discussion
today on who we are and our identity as Children of God.
One of the most important revelations we can get in our walk with God is to understand
what has happened to us in the spirit and therefore who we are in Christ. This
understanding will change the way we live our lives and the way we respond to
circumstances. Not understanding our identity in Him will keep us living far below our
rights and privileges in Christ.
What exactly does it mean to identify with Christ?
Our natural tendency is to search for our identity in external things. In our everyday
lives, we identify with a person, our earthly family, occupation, nationality, or even our
church..
Some Christians go as far as identifying themselves or others with the problems that
confront them. You hear people being identified as: divorced, bankrupt, unemployed,
childless, sick and so forth.
However our primary identity is rooted in the spirit realm and understanding your identity in
God starts with understanding who He is, what He says about Himself, how He sees
you and what He says about you.
In the Scriptures God often changed people's identities according to what He saw in the
spiritual realm. This is what happened to Gideon. Like all other Israelites he was so
intimidated and terrified of the intimidation of the Midianites that he hid inside a
winepress to thresh his wheat.
But the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon in Judges Chapter 6 called him a mighty
warrior and instructed him to go and rescue Israel from the Midianites.. Gideon definitely
did not feel like a mighty warrior and confessed his fear and weakness to the Lord. But
when he eventually saw himself the way God saw him, he went on to deliver the
Israelites from the Midianites.
God also changed Abram's name to Abraham- father of many nations when he did not
have any child.
Romans 4:7 says that God calls those things that are not as though they were. So when
God calls us perfect, healed, righteous etc, this may not exist in the natural realm, but
they exist in the spiritual realm and that is yhe way God sees us..
How then do we know what God is calling us in the spiritual realm since they do not
exist in the natural realm?

! James 1:23-25
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at
his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets
what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives
freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it — he
will be blessed in what he does.
According to the above scripture you cannot see your face physically
with your eyes. You only know what your face looks like by looking into
a mirror. So also, the spirit of a man is hidden from the physical eyes.
You can only know what God says about you and who you are in the
spirit by looking into the word of God. The word of God is a mirror that tells you
who you are in the spirit.
If you look steadily into the mirror of the word of God, you would find so many scriptures
describing your rights, privileges and your position as a child of God. Amongst other
provisions, you would find the following scriptures and I invite you to confess them with
me-
I am an adopted child of God (Romans 8:5)
I am an heir of God and a joint heir with Jesus Christ (So you share all of Christ’s
inheritance) (Galatians 4:6-7; Romans 8:17)
I am righteous. (Ephesians 4:24).
I have been healed (1 Peter 2:24).
I have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of
Jesus (Colossians 1:13)
I am more than a Conqueror and overwhelming victory is mine through Christ (Romans
8:17)
I am a member of a chosen race; a royal priesthood; a holy nation; God’s special
possession (1 Peter 2:9-10
I am a partaker of God’s divine nature (2 Peter 1:4)
I am reigning and ruling with Christ (Romans 5:10; Revelations 1:6)

Possibly you are wondering why so many believers around you are facing hardships,
lack, diseases and bitterness in spite of these provisions of the scripture.

One reason Satan is often able to reign, or rule, in the life of Christians is because many
Christians do not realize how they can bring forth the spiritual into the physical. They
lack knowledge about how they can make their rights and privileges in Christ a reality in
their lives.
This is the goal of this teaching. To help us get an awareness of who we are in Christ,
and to show us how we can draw these truths about our identity which are hanging in
the spiritual realm into our physical circumstances—so that we can stop living below our
potentials as Christians.
In our next teaching, we will look at the process of drawing our identity in Christ from our
perfect spirit into our physical circumstances.
